How to change a nappy
Whether you are a caregiver or someone who needs assistance with personal care, it's important to know how to change a nappy properly. While it may seem daunting at first, with practice and patience, you can become confident in your ability to change a nappy. Read on to find step-by-step instructions on how to change an adult nappy on yourself, on someone else, and on a baby.
Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. For an adult nappy change, you will need:
- Disposable or reusable nappies
- Wipes
- Disposable gloves
- Plastic bag for removing the soiled nappy.
It's important to have everything within arm's reach to avoid leaving the person unattended.
Prepare the Area
Choose a clean, flat surface to change the nappy. A changing table or bed is a good option. Lay a waterproof pad or towel under the person to protect the surface from any leaks. If you're changing a nappy on yourself, find a private area where you can lie down comfortably.
Remove the Soiled Nappy
If you're changing someone else's nappy, have them lie down on their back and raise their hips off the surface with a pillow or rolled-up towel. If you're changing your own nappy, roll onto your side and slide the clean nappy underneath your bottom.
Then, roll back onto your back and remove the soiled nappy. Use the front of the nappy to wipe away any excess faeces or urine. If the nappy is particularly soiled, use wipes or a damp washcloth to clean the area. If you're changing someone else's nappy, be sure to wear gloves and be gentle and respectful of their privacy.
Clean the Area
Use wipes or a damp washcloth to clean the area thoroughly. For women, always wipe from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria. For men, lift the penis and clean underneath. Pat the area dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. If the person has any skin irritation or redness, apply a barrier cream to protect their skin.
Put on the Clean Nappy
Slide the clean nappy underneath the person and fasten it securely. Make sure the nappy is snug but not too tight. If the person is bedridden, make sure they are positioned comfortably on their back or side to avoid pressure sores. If you're changing your own nappy, fasten the clean nappy securely and adjust it to ensure a comfortable fit.
Changing a Baby's Nappy
Changing a baby's nappy follows a similar process as changing an adult nappy. You will need nappies, wipes, and a plastic bag for the soiled nappy. Lay the baby down on a changing table or clean surface and undo the tabs on the dirty nappy. Lift the baby's legs by the ankles and clean the area thoroughly with wipes or a damp washcloth. For girls, always wipe from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria.
For boys, lift the penis and clean underneath. Pat the area dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. Apply a barrier cream if necessary. Slide the clean nappy underneath the baby and fasten it securely. Make sure the nappy is snug but not too tight. Always wash your hands thoroughly after changing a baby's nappy.
