Nappy Rash Guide

Nappy rashes are a common occurrence for many parents and caregivers, but that doesn’t make it any less unpleasant for you or your child. So, let’s get to understanding the causes, symptoms, and remedies for nappy rash so your child can stay happy, healthy and rash free.

What is nappy rash?

Nappy rash is a common skin irritation that appears as redness, inflammation, and discomfort in the nappy area, and occurs when delicate skin is exposed to prolonged moisture, friction, and contact with irritants. Symptoms can include tender, slightly raised, scaly or chapped skin, as well as heightened discomfort during nappy changes.

Moisture and wetness

When it remains in contact with moisture for extended periods, the skin becomes vulnerable to irritation. This can result from frequent urination or the presence of damp nappies.

Friction

Constant rubbing between the nappy and the skin can damage the skin’s protective barrier, increasing the risk of developing a rash.

Irritants

Chemicals in detergents, soaps, baby wipes, and fragrance additives can trigger or worsen a nappy rash. Acidic substances in your child’s diet can lead to more acidic urine, further irritating the skin.

Preventing nappy rash

Although common, nappy rash is equally easy to avoid altogether and you need never worry about it if you follow some simple steps.

  • Regular nappy changes - Change your child’s nappy whenever it becomes soiled or wet to minimise exposure to moisture.
  • Gentle cleansing - During nappy changes, use a soft cloth or unscented baby wipe to clean the nappy area gently. Avoid excessive rubbing.
  • Pat-drying technique - After cleaning, pat the skin dry to avoid any friction and irritation that comes from rubbing.

The type of nappy you use is also incredibly important to avoiding nappy rash. Choose a nappy that is made from breathable materials that allows air circulation, has good absorbency to minimise contact between skin and moisture, and use fragrance-free options that are less likely to result in reactions and irritations.

You should also allow for regular nappy-free time to allow their skin to breathe and reduce moisture accumulation. Create a safe, clean space for them to roam

freely - and under careful supervision - without a nappy. Aim for several of these intervals throughout the day, each lasting around 15 minutes.

Treating nappy rash

If your child is already dealing with some nappy rash, don’t panic because it can be effectively managed at home. If it persists or shows signs of infection, make sure to seek medical advice.

Daily skincare routine

Keep a regular skincare routine for them to promote healthy skin. Cleanse the skin gently during bath time using mild, fragrance free soaps or cleansers designed with sensitive skin in mind.

Moisturising and protecting their delicate skin

After bath time, apply a moisturiser to keep your child’s skin hydrated, something hypoallergenic and free from fragrances and dyes. Also, use a nappy rash cream or ointment during each change - even when there is no active rash - to provide a protective barrier and prevent future irritation.
